1861 –  first documented game (similar to rugby) played in Toronto, Canada

1869 –  first college football game –  Princeton defeats Rutgers 6-4  /  the field is 120 yards long  /  25 players on each side

1875 –  ball is an oval rugby ball  /  field length is reduced to 100 yards  /  15 players per side  /  referees

1876 –  H-shaped goal posts on the goal line

1880-85  –  5 yards in three downs to get a first down  /  11 men per side  /  field goals = 5 points  touchdown and extra point = 4  /  called plays

1897 – touchdown = 5 points

1905 –  Teddy Roosevelt calls a meeting of college officials to deal with deaths playing football which leads to the creation of the NCAA to regulate the game  /  forward pass is legalized  /  no locking arms  /  no pileups

1909 –  field goal =  3 pts.

1910 –  have to have 7 men on the line of scrimmage

1912 –  TD = 6 pts.  /  fourth down is added /  punts

1921 –  first radio broadcast

1922 –  American Professional Football League becomes the NFL

1934 –  current shape of the ball

1939 –  mandatory helmets in college football (pros later)

1958 –  two point conversion added in college

1960 –  American Football League created to compete with NFL

1967 –  first Super Bowl  /  slingshot-shaped goal posts

1974 –  goal posts moved to the back of the end zone  /  sudden death for regular season games

1994 –  pros adopt the two point conversion

1999 –  NFL allows challenges
