The lack of a key might have doomed over 1,500 people on board the Titanic. The ship was five days into its maiden voyage when it hit an iceberg. The iceberg was not spotted in time to take evasive action. The two sailors in the crow’s nest did not have access to the binoculars kept in a locked box. All they needed was the key, and it was not even on board the ship. Second officer David Blair had been transferred to the Titanic’s sister ship the Olympic. When he left the ship, he absent-mindedly had the key in his pocket. One of the lookouts later claimed that if he had binoculars, he would have seen the iceberg in time. Some experts deny this contending that the night was dark and even with binoculars it would not have been seen.  We’ll never know.
