The picture is of a famous incident in Daniel Boone’s life. His daughter Jemima and two other teenage girls had been captured by a Shawnee war party. Boone and others tracked the Indians for two days and ambushed them, rescuing the girls. In another famous story, it was Boone himself who was captured. When Ft. Boonesborough ran short of salt one winter, Boone led a group of men to Blue Licks salt spring 60 miles away. They spent several weeks there and one day Boone went out hunting and was captured by Shawnee Indians. He was forced to run a gauntlet and was adopted by Chief Blackfish. He pretended to befriend the Indians. He was called Sheltowee (Big Turtle). When he learned of a planned attack on Boonesborough, he escaped and crossed 160 miles of wilderness in four days to warn the settlers. Some viewed him as an Indian collaborator, but he was able to convince them that he had been pretending the whole time. The fort withstood a twelve day siege because of the leadership of Boone.
