Was Hitler Jewish? It would be the greatest irony if he was. Hitler’s mother was Maria Shicklgruber. When Adolf was born his birth certificate did not identify his father. When his mother married five years later to Johann Georg Hiedler, her son’s name was changed to that of his stepfather and then later to Hitler. Even before he became Fuhrer, there were rumors about his actual father being Jewish. Opponents of the Nazi’s made accusations to embarrass Hitler. In 1953, Han Frank published his autobiography “In the Face of the Gallows”. Frank was a lawyer friend of Hitler. The Fuhrer asked him to look into a letter from Hitler’s nephew threatening to reveal his Jewish ancestry. According to Frank, who headed the Nazi government in occupied Poland, Hitler did have Jewish blood. The story was that his grandmother had worked as a servant in the home of a prosperous Jewish family in Graz, Austria. During this time, she got pregnant. The leading suspect was a 19-year-old son named Leopold Frankenreiter (sometimes spelled Frankenburger). Maria was 42 at the time.
In 2010, Belgian journalist Jean-Paul Mulders and historian Marc Vermeeran convinced 39 relatives of Hitler to provide saliva samples for DNA testing. The results were that Hitler may have had Jewish and African ancestors. Mulder: “One can from this postulate that Hitler was related to people whom he despised.” In 2022, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov proclaimed that Hitler had Jewish blood. The “Graz story” was given new life.
Unfortunately, for people who look for opportunities to make history more sensational, there is no proof that Hitler’s grandfather was Jewish. The Jews had long since been expelled from Graz before his grandmother lived there. Plus, there is no proof she even lived in the city. As for Franks, he is not the most reputable source for anything. One must conclude that very likely the accusation that Hitler was Jewish is false.
