- It occurred on Sept. 8, 1900. The hurricane came ashore as a Category 4 with winds over 130 MPH. The storm surge was 15 feet. Over 6,000 were killed, many of them tourists. 3,600 buildings were destroyed. The damage was estimated at $20 million (about $700 million today).
- It is called the Great Galveston Hurricane. The National Weather Service did not start naming storms until 1953.
- It was the worst natural disaster in terms of fatalities in American History. Second is the Miami hurricane of 1928 (over 2,500 dead) and third is Katrina (1,200 dead).
- It is the third most costly natural disaster after Miami hurricane 1926 and Katrina. Fourth on the list is Galveston 1915.
- Galveston was the biggest seaport in Texas before the storm. Houston took over as #1 as a result.
- The U.S. Weather Bureau tried to warn people to move to higher ground, but most people ignored it.
