1. It occurred on Sept. 8, 1900. The hurricane came ashore as a Category 4 with winds over 130 MPH. The storm surge was 15 feet.   Over 6,000 were killed, many of them tourists.  3,600 buildings were destroyed.  The damage was estimated at $20 million (about $700 million today).
  2. It is called the Great Galveston Hurricane. The National Weather Service did not start naming storms until 1953.
  3. It was the worst natural disaster in terms of fatalities in American History. Second is the Miami hurricane of 1928 (over 2,500 dead) and third is Katrina (1,200 dead).
  4. It is the third most costly natural disaster after Miami hurricane 1926 and Katrina. Fourth on the list is Galveston 1915.
  5. Galveston was the biggest seaport in Texas before the storm. Houston took over as #1 as a result.
  6. The U.S. Weather Bureau tried to warn people to move to higher ground, but most people ignored it.
