Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat stationed in Budapest, Hungary during WWII. Although Sweden was neutral, Wallenberg was not. He refused to stand by and watch the Holocaust occur in Hungary. It is estimated that he saved as many as 100,000 Jews from death from July to December, 1944. He created passports called “protective passports” that he would hand out to Jews threatened by deportation. Sometimes he would literally hand them out to Jews on deportation trains. He also created “Swedish Houses” which were safe houses that flew the Swedish flag. When the Nazis were going to exterminate the Budapest ghetto, Raoul used diplomatic and moral pressure to stop it. In January, 1945, he was arrested by the Soviets and accused of spying for the Americans. He was probably executed in 1947.
