Today is the anniversary of the start of a typically horrible Nazi program.

In 1935, the Nazis began to worry about the birthrate of Aryans in Germany.  The Lebensborn (“Spring of Life) program was initiated to facilitate more babies.  It was initiated on Dec. 12, 1935 by Heinrich Himmler.  At first, the Lebensborn homes were mainly for the pregnant wives of SS soldiers or for unwed mothers who were willing to have their babies adopted.  The homes were often the houses of Jews who were the victims of the Holocaust.  After the war began, SS soldiers were encouraged to “mingle” with the local girls, especially ones who were blond and blue-eyed.  If they got pregnant, they were sent to a Lebensborn home.  The babies were then adopted by good German families and raised as Nazis.  16,000-20,000 good little Aryans were raised this way.  If they didn’t pan out, they were sent to concentration camps.  Other Lebensborn kids were orphans or “voluntarily” given up by their parents.  Or kidnapped from their parents.  About 200,000 Poles were abducted. The most famous person that came out of the Lebensborn program is Anni-Frid Lyngstad, one of the females in ABBA.  Her Norwegian mother was impregnated by a German soldier.
