- Charles Manson was born to an unwed 16-year-old. She was an alcoholic criminal who once traded her baby to a waitress who wanted a child for a pitcher of beer. His uncle had to track him down. His mother went to prison when he was 5 for stealing a car using a ketchup bottle masquerading as a gun. He was raised by his aunt and uncle who had to put up with his violent nature. He only got four years of schooling and was illiterate.
- As an adolescent he started his life of crime. From petty theft, he graduated to car theft and pimping. He spent almost half of his life in prison before the Tate / LaBianca murders. In prison he learned to play the guitar and became obsessed with the Beatles. When he was released in 1967, he didn’t want to leave and told the guards he would not be able to adjust to life in the real world.
- He used Scientology and Dale Carnegie techniques to manipulate his “family”. The family was mostly young women. They lived together on a ranch. Some of the things that were banned were: books, calendars, watches, clocks, and eyeglasses.
- Manson convinced his followers that there was going to be an apocalyptic race war. He called the war “Helter Skelter” after the song on the Beatles’ White Album. That album signaled the war and held clues to it. The killings would initiate the war. After the first murder, they left one of the victim’s wallets in a black neighborhood, hoping someone would use the credit cards and blacks would be blamed for the murders. The family would sit the war out in a secret city under Death Valley called the Bottomless Pit. When the war was over, they would rule over the black survivors.
- The Family was connected to the Beach Boys. Dennis Wilson picked up a couple of the girls hitchhiking and brought them to his mansion to “hang out”. When he returned from a recording session, Manson and a bunch more were there and most stayed for weeks. Wilson ran up a $100,000 bill which included treatment for their venereal diseases. He was impressed with Manson’s music and arranged a recording session, which did not go well due to Manson’s unstable personality. Much later, some of Manson’s songs were recorded by Rob Zombie, Guns n’ Roses, and Marilyn Manson.
- Manson did not target Sharon Tate. He sent his minions to the house on Cielo Drive because he wanted them to kill Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day) because he was the record producer who found he could not work with Manson. Melcher had moved out of the house because after telling his mom about this wacko character, Doris had urged him to. He rented the house to Roman Polanski. (Some historians believe he knew Melcher had rented it to Polanski).
- The Family had a kill list that included: Tom Jones, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Frank Sinatra, and Steve McQueen.
- The victims were: Sharon Tate (8.5 month pregnant, up and coming starlet; girlfriend of Polanski), Jay Sebring (celebrity hair stylist), Abigail Folger (heir to the coffee founder), Wojciech Frykowski (writer), Steven Parent (friend of the house’s caretaker) / Leno and Rosemary LaBianca (business owners). Polanski was in Europe working on a film. “Pigs” was written in blood at the first scene and “Healter Skelter” and “Death to Pigs” at the other. This was done to put the blame on blacks and start the race war.
- The ranch was not investigated until four months after. Susan Atkins (the killer of Sharon Tate) had been arrested for an unrelated offense and bragged about the murder to her cell mates.
- Manson wanted to defend himself, but was forced to use a lawyer. He chose a man who was noted for being very boring, so Charles would come off extra interesting. He carved an X in his forehead early in the trial. Later, he converted it into a swastika.
