After losing the Battle of Salamis, Persian Emperor Xerxes left his army in Greece and returned home with his fleet. On the way, the fleet ran into a terrible storm and Xerxes’ ship was about to go under. He asked the captain what could be done and the captain said they needed to lighten the load on the ship. Xerxes cried out “who will save their emperor?” Several crew members promptly jumped overboard. The ship survived the storm. When Xerxes got home, he gave the captain a gold crown for saving his life and then had him executed for taking the lives of his men.
